Technical sparring on material selection, lifespan, temperature and chemical exposure provides a better basis for stable solutions and fewer disruptions in production.
How does TESS work with material quality and lifespan?
Materials and components are selected with a focus on chemical resistance, temperature resistance, durability and long-term process stability in demanding environments. We mark hoses with their own unique number. Each number has a unique pressure test certificate specifying the date of production and pressure testing. We recommend that hoses be inspected once a year. Read more about TESS Hose Management here.
When does TESS typically get involved in the process?
TESS often contributes from needs assessment and technical sparring through to the finished solution and subsequent documentation.

Pharma
Reassurance every day
FAQ
Which hose solution is best suited for aggressive chemicals?
The choice of hose depends on the medium, concentration, temperature, pressure and cleaning method. That’s why we always start with the application before recommending a solution. For aggressive chemicals, we often choose PTFE- or fluoropolymer-based hoses, because they combine high chemical resistance with low leaching and a long lifespan.
What’s the difference between FDA, USP Class VI and EU 1935/2004?
FDA and EU 1935/2004 concern materials approved for contact with food and process media, while USP Class VI is a biological test standard often used for plastics and elastomers in pharma and medical devices. In pharma, components are often selected based on a combination of material approvals, documentation and process requirements. When advising pharma customers, we therefore look at the overall documentation package rather than a single approval.
What materials are typically used in pharmaceutical process plants?
In pharma, stainless steel is typically used, along with materials such as PTFE, silicone, EPDM and other approved plastics and elastomers. Materials are chosen based on hygiene, chemical resistance, temperature resistance, cleaning method and documentation requirements.
How is traceability ensured for pharma components?
We ensure traceability through batch numbers, certificates, material documentation and clear labeling of components or packaging. This makes it possible to document which materials were used, where they came from, and which production batch they belong to.
How do you correctly size a pressure/vacuum valve and/or flame arrester
Correct sizing requires specific data about the tank, medium, flow, pressure, temperature and the plant’s operating conditions. For flame arresters, assessment of explosive atmosphere and potential ignition sources is also included. We calculate and select the solution based on data about the specific plant.
Which hoses are suitable for CIP and SIP cleaning?
Hoses for CIP and SIP need to withstand cleaning chemicals, high temperatures and repeated cleaning cycles. Silicone, PTFE and selected pharma-approved hoses are often used, but the choice depends on the process medium, steam, temperature, pressure and documentation requirements.
What requirements apply in the pharma industry?
The pharma industry sets high requirements for hygienic design, ease of cleaning, material documentation, traceability and operational reliability. Components must be able to be part of validated processes and meet relevant requirements for quality, safety and documentation.
What is the cleaning procedure for hoses in pharma production?
The cleaning procedure depends on the hose, medium and process. Typically, hoses are part of a validated CIP or SIP process, where cleaning agent, temperature, time, flow and rinsing are defined and documented. It’s important that the hose is suitable for the procedure and is regularly checked for wear, damage and cleanliness.

What role do flame arresters and pressure-vacuum valves play in energy plants?
Flame arresters and pressure-vacuum valves are part of critical functions, where control, safety and protection of plant and installations are essential to overall operation. Flame arresters are used when explosive vapors are transported, stored or processed and a potential ignition source is present. They prevent flames and explosions from spreading between tanks and plants. Pressure/vacuum valves equalize the pressure in the tank while also reducing product loss and emissions, with one of the lowest leakage rates on the market.
